INSIDE THE PAGE

The client, National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature, asked each student in the unit to design a children's book exhibition to showcase their large collection of Australian books and memorabilia.

The overarching intent for this project was to create an interactive design that engaged and educated the audience.

It was Australian author Patrick Guest that captured my interest, his stories covering topics such as diversity, kindness, and courage. One of his books is dedicated to those living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which played a big part in my design, as I wanted to ensure that my exhibition design was disability accessible.

The inspiration for the form of my design came from a turning page, and the idea of being lost in a book, the base exhibition structure employing rigid and triangular forms.

Taking further inspiration from the ‘I am Frog’ exhibition in the Children’s Book Museum, Hague. I used elements, such as slides and bridges, to make the stories come to life in a way that allowed the children to be fully immersed in the story.

A personal mission of mine is to normalise sustainable design, this project was no exception. I specified sustainable materials such as cork and timber throughout the structure, as well as taking other smaller steps towards adaptive reuse to ensure its positive environmental impact.

This was my first attempt at using an external rendering software, I chose Lumion. It took some time to learn as many elements of the program were not intutive, but in the end, I was able to produce a successful end product.
